When the LOST is FOUND

I had to laugh today. I was just leaving church when I noticed I had a text from my daughter Shawna. She was missing her keys and wondered if I had picked them up last night when I left. I knew I hadn’t, but I checked anyway and texted her a “no.” “Please check again!” She said, “You are my only hope.”
When I arrived at Shawna and Ricki’s for lunch they were still searching desperately. They had actually been ready for church, with the kids packed up and in the car, before they realized the keys were missing. Obviously, they didn’t make it to church. Well, the search went on for the next two hours. Off and on, one of us would start looking all over again. Shawna was sure she had left them on the arm of the couch right inside the door, so I searched there repeatedly; under it, behind it, in every nook and cranny.
She was ready to give up and call the car company to find out how to get a new set, but had gone outside to check the car one last time when, lo and behold, I reached into a fold in the back of the couch and there they were! We all took a deep breath and were able to relax.
It wasn’t the first time today that I found what was lost. After church, one of our Messiah Village residents was looking everywhere for the cane she had laid down. She couldn’t leave without it, she needed it! Several of us joined in the search, and, even when she said she had already checked the bathroom, I told her I would check again. She insisted  that it wasn’t necessary, she had already looked there, until I told her, “Well, maybe a second set of eyes will help.” Sure enough, as soon as I opened the door I spotted the cane hanging on the back of a rocking chair. She was so surprised when I walked out with her cane, hadn’t she just looked there herself?
Then there was this past Thursday. Another resident was frantic because she had misplaced her purse. She knew she had it in the salon and was sure she must have left it there. Since there was no way she could concentrate on her physical therapy, or anything else for that matter, I told her I would go to the Salon and check for her, (even though someone else had already been dispatched on a similar errand.) Everyone there assured me that she had left with her purse in hand. She was so disappointed when I returned without it...her money, her hearing aides and other important items were in her purse, she needed it and would have no peace until it was found.
On a whim I went to her room, opened the top drawer of her nightstand and was not the least surprised to find the missing purse. When I returned and dropped it in her lap the look on her face and the delight and relief in her voice were a perfect reward! All was well in her world again!
Three significant “lost and found” incidents in four days. How could I not be reminded of the three stories in Luke chapter 15: a lost sheep, a lost coin, a lost son. Three stories meant to remind us how much God cares about lost people.
Have you ever considered the desperation that accompanies the searches for lost people? Think of the little boys or girls, the young women or pregnant mothers who have been at the center of so many highly publicized searches. What I find both heartbreaking and eye opening is the extent that a people will go to search for a physically missing individual and yet, there are people all around us who are spiritually lost, a far more dangerous and desperate state.
So here is my question, “What would it take for our efforts to “seek and save” the spiritually lost to come anywhere near the extent that we go after the physically lost?” Just something to think about...

A Morning Prayer...

Eternal Father of my soul, let my first thought today be of You, let my first impulse be to worship You, let my first speech be Your name, let my first action be to kneel before You        in prayer.
  • For Your perfect wisdom and perfect goodness:
  • For the love with which You love mankind:
  • For the love with which You love me:
  • For the great and mysterious opportunity of my life:
  • For the indwelling of Your Spirit in my heart:
  • For the sevenfold gifts of Your Spirit:                                                                             I praise and worship You, O Lord.
Yet let me not, when this morning prayer is said, think my worship ended and spend the         day in forgetfulness of You. Rather from these moments of quietness let light go forth,           and joy, and power, that will remain with me through all the hours of the day;
  • Keeping me chaste in thought:
  • Keeping me temperate and truthful in speech:
  • Keeping me faithful and diligent in my work:
  • Keeping me humble in my estimation of myself:
  • Keeping me honorable and generous in my dealings with others:
  • Keeping me loyal to every hallowed memory of the past:
  • Keeping me mindful of my eternal destiny as a child of Yours.                                   Through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.

Lessons Learned...

This past September, at the Messiah Village Fall Fest, I bought this book,  Lessons Learned on the Journey: Exploring the Realities of Faith Through Word and Art. (I bought it right before they started closing up in a $2.00 a bag special!) I guess it's important for you to know that I didn't buy the book for its written content, but because I loved the illustrations.) So, it just happened that I picked it up and was looking at the amazing line drawings again just last night.

So here's how my God works in my life! I dragged myself to the evening service at the Village tonight. I was way too tried after a long and somewhat trying day and would rather have just stayed home. Except that, for some reason, I was prompted to get up and move it! I can't tell you how surprised I was to walk into the Chapel and see this very book displayed (and on sale for $20.00) and to find out that this evening's featured missionary speaker was no other than Bob Snyder, M.D. the author!

But the story gets even better. He has a ministry among health care providers in Budapest, Hungary.       I kept wondering if he knew my brother-in-law Tim who lived in Budapest for several years with his family. Well, guess what? As soon as I introduced myself and told him my name, he asked if I knew Tim! It is a small world (kind of) and I love how my God works.

Oh, and by-the-way, I think I'll look beyond the pictures and actually read the book!

Absent Spouse Syndrome

Several years ago I wrote an article for Pastors and Counselors called Absent Spouse Syndrome. It very vividly and openly describes the circumstances of every marriage I have seen end in divorce over the last 10-15 years. That same year Pastor Alan Robinson and I presented an Impact Course entitled "Fostering Healthy Marriages" in the six conferences of the Brethren in Christ denomination. During that time I shared this article with those who were present and it was as though "a light came on" as one pastor after another recognized exactly what I was describing, because they had seen it as well. (Some of them even admitted that they identified themselves...they were guilty of being the Absent Spouse!) Only one pastor told me he had never seen this, but then he came back later and admitted that, after he thought about it for awhile, he realized that he just hadn't been able to admit the truth of what he was hearing.
I have kept Absent Spouse "under wraps" except to share with Pastors and Counselors, until now.   There have been several reasons for not sharing it further, but I have realized that I have a responsibility to expose this "phenomena" in the hopes that it will save even one troubled marriage before it is too late.
And so, I present Absent Spouse Syndrome with warnings....
Wives, if you see yourself in this then PLEASE take this article and run with it! Show it to your husband and take it to your pastor/counselor and don't stop until you get their attention. As well, you alone are responsible for the condition of your heart. If it has become hard and if you have built walls around it, then you need to be in close relationship with God and you need to be accountable and supported by women who will give you wise and godly advise.
Husbands, SHE is serious! If you are not listening and if you see yourself in this article be warned. If there is a thread of love in your heart for your wife then you better be paying attention. If you fail to heed this warning and her pleas you will pay a huge price. The cost will be great.
Pastors and Counselors: I can't stress this loud enough! Pay Attention! Do everything you can to make sure you listen and respond appropriately. If you can't handle this situation find someone who can help this husband and wife before it is too late!

             Syndrome

Absent Spouse Syndrome
Over the course of the past few years, I have identified an affliction in marriages that I have come to call Absent Spouse Syndrome.
Often, the first indication that a pastor or counselor receives that makes him or her aware of a serious problem in a particular marriage, is a call from a desperate husband who wants to know if he and his wife can come in for counseling. At this point the wife is, most often, not interested in talking to you or to anyone else, although the husband may still be able to coerce her into a “one time” visit.
If she does keep the appointment, the first thing you will probably notice about her is a very cold and hardened demeanor. If at all possible, she will sit as far away from her husband as she can possibly get, with her arms folded in front of her. Her face is devoid of emotion, although you may sense or detect an underlying element of anger or a seething rage. As well, she may be completely uninterested in even talking to you, let alone sharing her feelings or problems. Her answers to your questions will be short, calculated and cynical.

Her husband, on the other hand, is ready to “spill his guts.” He appears to be willing to do anything to save his floundering marriage. He is desperate to do “whatever” it takes. He may confess to any number of “sins” or shortcomings that have contributed to the crisis in his marriage. He will, more than likely, confess to indifference and a variety of addictions, all of which he is more than willing to address and for which he is extremely repentant. He is obviously distressed and desperate to the point of pleading and begging. “Pitiful” would describe him well, at this point.
However, upon further investigation, you come to learn “the rest of the story.” It will probably go something like this...This couple has been married for 10-20 years, although I have observed some who have been married for far fewer years. For most of their married life the wife has not been satisfied or happy with the quality of the marital relationship. She may feel alone most of the time, even when he is there. She tries to talk to him and to share her feelings and concerns with him. She has, more than likely, read books on relationships, or watched appropriate programs or sought advice and counsel from others. She may plead with her husband to go with her for marriage counseling or to talk to the pastor.
And for years, her requests, her concerns and her pleadings are met with indifference and apathy. “We don't have any problems.” Or “I don't have a problem and I don't need counseling.” Or “If you have a problem, you get counseling.” As the years go by, the husband continues to be “absent” from his wife spiritually, emotionally and, sometimes, even physically.
Eventually, the wife begins to “build a wall around herself.” Brick-by-brick, one painful experience after another, year-after-year she builds a wall that is meant to protect her from the man she used to love with all of her heart. She has come to realize that, if he is not going to get help and if things are never going to change, he will only continue to hurt her and she is desperate to protect herself from any further pain. A sense of helplessness and hopelessness compels her to become indifferent towards him. She begins to close down emotionally. She becomes adrift spiritually, after all, “Where is God in all of this?” “Why hasn't he answered my prayers? Does He really even care?”
Finally, something happens. The husband makes a most critical error, one too many careless and thoughtless mistakes and it becomes “the last straw.” She is through. It is over. There will be no turning back.
By the time this couple reaches your office, the “divorce” is already well under way. She has already divorced him spiritually. She has divorced herself from him emotionally. She has probably divorced herself from him physically and she may have already become involved with someone who is more than willing to meet her emotional and physical needs.
At one time, the husband had all the control and the wife had none. Now, she is in complete control and he finds himself desperate to undo years of apathy and neglect, but it is too late. In his desperation, this husband, who has now admitted to the fact that he is “willing to do anything” to save his marriage and may very well be trying to change some of his behaviors, is totally clueless as to why it just isn't working. “Why won't she forgive me?” “Why won't she try to save our marriage?” “Why won't she give me another chance? Doesn't she now how serious I am?” “How can she just give up on our marriage like this?”
At the same time, he begins to smother her with attention, hence the term, “Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater.” Now, he wants to talk. Now, he wants to meet her physical and emotional needs. Now, he is ready to get serious about a relationship with the Lord. Now, it is too late.
His smothering presence only tends to push her farther away. His efforts to gain support from family and friends, by showing his changed behavior and his willingness to get counseling, only angers her more. She has heard it all before. When his willingness to share all of her shortcomings and focus attention away from his own responsibility and onto his wife’s, overshadows his willingness to address his own issues, a few more bricks “hit the fan” and fall into place. His attempts to “corral” her are a waste of time and effort. She has now become the Absent Spouse.
Is there hope for this marriage? In my experience, nothing short of a divine act of God will save this one! So what can we, as pastors and counselors, do?
  • When a wife tells you there are problems in a marriage, you better pay attention.
  • When a husband tells you there are problems in a marriage, it is probably too late.
  • Pray for the marriages in your congregation.
  • Provide adequate pre-marital counseling.
  • Warn, counsel and teach your married couples in the early stages of marriage.
  • Learn to detect the tale-tale signs of a neglected marriage.
  • Listen to the women in your congregation who come to you for counsel.
  • When it happens, help him to pick of the pieces of his life, to grow in His relationship with the Lord, to be a good father to his children and to live the rest of his life for the glory of God.

Our Baby Story by Jana Bentch Stoltzfus

NOTE: Names of my dear friends have been changed :)

This is our story…a story of God’s faithfulness, His love, His guidance and His perfect timing!

Nate and I had been trying to conceive for several years. Two years ago, in June of '08, I first truly asked for others to agree with me in prayer for this. The first time was with my cell group – a group of wonderful young ladies who I believe were faithful to pray! One evening when we met for cell, we met on the hill at EMU. It was a beautiful evening, NO rain in sight – just some big beautiful clouds. Kay, Joy, Emma and I were praying and singing as our hearts felt led. I asked the girls to pray - to truly pray that God would bless me with children. The girls began praying for me. As soon as they started praying, I looked up and saw a huge bright beautiful rainbow!!! As they continued to pray, another one appeared and then a third one! Three rainbows! What a miracle!! The girls and I agreed that those rainbows were a symbol of God’s promise to me. I believe on that day that God promised me three children (though the girls joked that maybe I would have triplets!) While they were praying, Emma had gotten the sense that the Lord was saying to sing out to Him every chance I could…Kay was then led to Isaiah 54 – 1"Sing, O barren women, you who never bore a child; burst into song, shout for joy, you who were never in labor… 9To me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth.” Oh what a beautiful image!!! As soon as the girls were finished praying for me, the rainbows disappeared!

The next day, I was outside working in my yard and recalled what Emma had said about singing. So I started to sing and as I looked up in the sky, a rainbow appeared! Oh the tears…

That following spring, in April of '09, I was going through a time of struggle, wondering when something was ever going to happen. Nate and I called his mom and asked for prayer. While she was praying she received from the Lord the number 12 and the word wisteria. We were not sure what that meant at the time, but knew that God would reveal it eventually.

A few months later, as I found myself struggling once again, wondering and waiting, God led a practical stranger to speak into my life and to encourage me. During a yard sale at Nate’s family’s farm, Holly (an acquaintance of Nate’s from high school) stopped by and talked to Nate for a little. She left, but returned a half-hour later out of obedience. She said that she kept hearing from the Lord to turn around and come back to us and that He wanted to tell us “You are not forgotten”. She asked if that meant anything to me and I shared about our struggles with having children. She confirmed that is what she had sensed it was about! This still brings tears to my eyes every time I think about it. Every time I need a little encouragement, I think back to this…God has not, nor will ever forget about me!

This last winter, a gentleman from my mom’s church, who we did not know very well, heard a word from the Lord and shared it with my mom that the Lord is going to bless us as he and his wife were blessed. They struggled for several years getting pregnant, but the Lord blessed them with their own child and later they were once again blessed by being asked to adopt a child. I have always been open to adoption…so we will see if God has that in store for us!

On Valentine’s Day of this last year, God once again spoke into our lives! After church, Ellie (who knew nothing of our situation) said that during worship she saw an image of Jesus holding a baby and He handed it to me. She said the baby was a little girl that looked just like me! I sobbed! One more reminder that God would fulfill His promises to me!

This last fall, I quit leading my cell group and began to really struggle with two of my friends from the group. These two friends became pregnant fairly easily and fairly soon after they started trying. It was very hard on me to hear of both of their pregnancies and in a sense, I “unfriended” them. But the Lord called me to reconciliation. On April 11, God laid it on my heart that I must reconcile my relationships with Kay and Joy. I immediately emailed them and asked them to meet with me that week. We had planned on meeting that Wednesday. When Wednesday (the 14th) came, I got home from work and the last thing I wanted to do was meet with them. As I sat down to email them and let them know it wasn’t going to work, Kay called. I knew that God wasn’t going to let me get away with this one! A half-hour later, Joy and Kay were sitting in my living room. I apologized to them for how I had treated them. I admitted my hurt, but did not blame them, but felt that God was telling me that I needed to reconcile my relationship with them. It was a very sweet time with these two.

That following Sunday (the 18th), I shared with my new cell group (Ellie, Rachel and Melanie) about my story. Rachel anointed me for healing, which was the first time I had been anointed for infertility. The ladies prayed great prayers over me. While Ellie was praying, she had a sense about the birthing process for me and how it will be a very spiritual time for me when that time comes.

So, there I was, after almost two years of waiting for God to fulfill His promise, but remaining fervent in my prayers and having received many words of encouragement and promises from the Lord. Remember the two words my mother-in-law received – the number 12 and wisteria? Well, in the month of April (when wisteria blooms), 12 months after she received those words, 1 week after I reconciled my relationship with Kay and Joy, and 3 days after I was anointed, we found out we were pregnant (4/21/10)! AAAHHHH!!!! What a miracle! God is so good! He is so faithful! And what is really neat, is that we got pregnant right around Easter, I found out right before my birthday, we are due right around Christmas (during the 12th month of the year☺) and we just had confirmation that we are going to have a beautiful baby GIRL (who will look just like me ☺)

A couple of weeks after we found out (5/2/10), we shared with our cell group that we are pregnant. The ladies again prayed over me and anointed me. Rachel said that she received the image of the Lord’s holy fire surrounding the baby and me. The enemy cannot penetrate His holy fire, which is something I have clung to throughout this high-risk pregnancy. In fact, the name that we have picked out for our little girl means “the Lord’s holy fire”, but sorry, we aren’t sharing exactly what it is until she is born!

So, I thank you my friends and my family! Thank you for the many prayers that have been spoken on our behalf and on our little girl's behalf! This is truly a blessing and a miracle and I praise God each day to have the chance to share this testimony! I would not change anything about my story! He knew what was best for me! He knew the perfect timing and when both Nate and I would be absolutely ready to receive this child and to raise her to be a great woman of faith!
